Medical v. Surgical Weight Loss: What’s Right for Me?

Surgical weight loss isn’t right for everyone. For most people, it’s not going to be the easiest, healthiest, or cheapest way to get rid of extra weight. Physicians at The Weight Loss Solutions Center believe that any health issue that can be addressed non-surgically is best addressed outside of the operating room.

That being said, for many patients in San Antonio, surgical weight loss is a dream come true. If you answer yes to any of these questions, then surgical weight loss could be right for you:

  • Have you spent years of your life trying fad diets and exercise routines that just don’t work?
  • Have body image issues affected your career, social life, or family dynamics?
  • Are you suffering from type 2 diabetes, and tired of the disease ruling your life?
  • Is sleep apnea making every night a struggle (for you and your spouse)?
  • Is obesity preventing your dreams of becoming a mother?
  • Are you suffering from additional health complications as a result of your weight?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then we encourage you to contact the Bariatric Program Coordinator at (210) 921-8628.

Medical Weight Loss Options

When it comes to obesity – or any life-threatening health issue – there’s no single solution that works across the board. Some patients will require surgery, while others can lose weight through medical, non-surgical techniques.

Your surgeon and the team at the Weight Loss Solutions Center will work with you in a one-on-one setting to determine the best-fit program. Whether your goal is to lose 30 pounds, 100 pounds, or more, your goals can be achieved with one of these programs:

Rapid Weight Loss Program

The rapid weight loss program is designed to help patients kick start their weight loss through exercise, diet, and the use of specially prescribed dietary supplements.

Duration: 4 weeks

How It Works:

  • Patients begin with an initial 30-45 minute clinical visit with a member of the team. During this visit, the surgeon will review your medical history to determine if the program is right for you. Together, you will discuss different strategies and pharmaceuticals that could help you achieve your goals.
  • After your lab results have been received, the surgeon will address anynutritional deficiencies in your diet.
  • In the first class, patients will review the details of the program and learn about their personal responsibility in the Rapid Weight Loss Program.
  • Over the next few weeks, patients will be engaged in nutrition and behavior education classes.
  • Additional products may be purchased to aid you in meeting your goals.Genomic testing is also available at an additional cost.

Gradual Weight Loss Program

The Gradual Weight Loss Program is designed for patients who want gradual and ongoing weight loss support. This program focuses on keeping patients in ketosis, improving food choices, managing portion control, and introducing sustainable dietary supplements and habits.

Duration: 12 weeks

How It Works:

  • This program begins with a 30-45 minute clinical visit with the surgeon or another Weight Loss Solutions Center professional. The patient’s health history, pharmaceutical options, and strategies are discussed.
  • Next, patients begin regular meetings with a physician’s assistant toassess progress and make necessary adjustments.
  • If there are any nutritional deficiencies in the patient’s diet, they will be addressed during this phase.
  • In the first class, patients will review the details of the program and learn about their personal responsibility in the Gradual Weight Loss Program.
  • The Gradual Weight Loss Program has 12 weekly classes, focused on nutrition and behavior education.
  • Additional products may be purchased to aid you in meeting your goals.Genomic testing is also available at an additional cost.

Post-Operative Nutrition

While weight loss surgery can produce amazing results, it takes nutritional knowledge and commitment to keep those pounds off. Your surgeon and the team at the Weight Loss Solutions Center believes in educating patients well before surgery so that the odds are in their favor. During your initial pre-op evaluation with your surgeon there will be a review of your current nutritional needs and deficiencies.

Enjoying a New Post-Op Diet

Once you’ve gone through your initial pre-op evaluation, you will be provided with custom-tailored advice about how to eat healthily after your weight loss surgery. In addition to receiving information specific to your own body, you will receive printed information about pre- and post-weight loss surgery nutrition.

Two weeks prior to your surgery, you will attend a pre-operative diet class that will empower you to make smart choices about your pre- and post-surgery diet. With this information, it’s our hope that you will rid the pantry and refrigerator of all foods that are outside of your dietary plan. This will make the post-weight loss surgery dietary adjustment much easier.

After your surgery, the post-operative diet kicks into gear. Patients who have gone through bariatric surgery are typically advised to regularly consume special nutrition drinks that are high in protein and low in fiber, sugar, fat, and calories. With the prep work you did ahead of time, the transition to a new diet should be less challenging than you might expect. Plus, you’ll have follow up support from a staff nutritionist.

The Three Month Checkup

After three months of your post-operative diet, you’ll be asked to return to your surgeon’s office for a review of your micro- and macronutrients. This review helps us follow your progress and ensure that your weight loss is healthy and beneficial in the long term.

As a patient of the Weight Loss Solutions Center at Southwest General, you’ll have access to a nutritional support system online at weightlosssolutionssa.com, where you can receive support with post-operative nutrition and other issues.

Follow-up Care Philosophy

Having performed more than 2,500 surgeries, the Center’s surgeons believe that the success of weight loss surgery is 30% due to technical decisions and 70% due to follow-up and the patient’s behavior.

No matter what kind of weight loss surgery you and your surgeon choose, proper follow-up care and commitment from you is essential for long-term success. After weight loss surgery, a number of complications can ensue if patients don’t follow the dietary guidelines advised by their nutritionist. This is true of nearly everyweight loss surgery – not just Lap-Band or gastric bypass surgery.

The team at the Weight Loss Solutions Center realizes that adhering to a new diet can be a major challenge, which is why we make follow-up a major priority in our practice. In fact, many patients choose the Weight Loss Solutions Center at Southwest General because of our famous aftercare program and collaboration with renowned surgeons.

Follow-up care is available throughout all of South Texas. We have enhanced this follow-up care through:

  • An electronic tracking system
  • Online patient support groups
  • Local support groups
  • Social media (Facebook and Twitter)
  • Electronic voice and email messaging systems
  • Newsletters
  • Community classes are offered year-round every Saturday:

Support Groups

Support groups are a major component of our follow-up care philosophy. We believe that life changes as dramatic as surgical weight loss require a network of continual – and lifelong – support.

When you choose to pursue weight loss with the Weight Loss Solutions Center at Southwest General, you can be confident that you will receive dedicated support that helps you meet and surpass your goals.

Support groups address a wide range of issues, from body image and emotional damage to daily eating habits and dietary challenges. When you take advantage of the resources offered by our support groups, you’ll meet people who are dealing with the same issues you face.

Online Support Groups

Online support groups are integrated with various tools and programs, providing you with many options for getting the support you need:

  • Each patient is allowed an individual page, where you can share your story through a blog, photo galleries, and other forms.
  • Our Health Tracker Program makes it easy to track your body measurements and keep records about diet and exercise. Print it all out in a health report, and bring it in next time you come to see us!

On-Site Support Groups

If you live in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, or nearby areas, then we’d like to invite you to participate in one of our on-site support groups. Support groups meet once a month. Call us today at 1-877-215-WELL for details!
